Marion County Judges and Court Information
If suit must be filed to protect your rights, Marion County is located in the 12th Judicial District which also includes Bledsoe, Franklin, Grundy, Rhea and Sequatchie counties. The judges who preside over civil cases in the 12th Judicial District are:
The 12th Judicial District has published Local Rules which set forth the day to day procedures of the Court including such things as setting cases for trial, exhibits, dispositive motions, etc. A copy of the Local Rules can be reviewed here on the Administrative Office of the Courts website.
For the 2010-2011 reporting period, there were 55 tort cases (claims for personal injury or wrongful death) filed in Marion County. Six cases went to trial during that same time. Of those six cases, only two resulted in a verdict for the injured party. The total damages awarded for those two cases was $24,160.00 for an average award of $12,080.00. For the 2011-2012 reporting period, 57 tort cases were filed in Marion County and three went to trial. Only one of those trials resulted in a verdict for the injured party and the award in that case was $5,676,875.00. In 2012-2013, 50 tort cases were filed in Marion County and 2 tort cases went to trial. The injured party only won one of those two trials, but the verdict was just $10,125.00. In 2013-2014, 53 tort cases were filed and zero were tried. For 2014-2015, 56 tort cases were filed, 2 were tried and the injury victim won one of the trials. The award in that case was $34,332.00. During 2015-2016, 49 tort cases were filed and one was tried (non-jury). The injury victim won that trial and the verdict was $300,082. For 2016-2017, 62 tort cases were filed and one was tried. The injury victim lost that trial. In 2017-2018, 43 tort cases were filed but none were tried. Last year, 41 tort cases were filed and, again, none were tried. The last year referenced for this data is the 2018-2019 reporting period.
