As as fun and exhilarating as it is, riding a motorcycle can be dangerous. In fact, motorcycle riders are 29% more likely to die in an accident and four times more likely to be injured as compared to drivers of cars and trucks. There are a number of reasons for this including the fact that car and truck drivers often do not notice and respect motorcyclists on the roadway. In addition, motorcycles do not have the same type of safety equipment as cars such as a steel cage, seat belts, airbags, etc. On average, 5,000 motorcyclists in the United States will lose their life each year and roughly 88,000 people will be injured. In Tennessee, the number of motorcycle fatalities each year hovers around 150 and another 2,500 are injured.

The injury patterns, in order of frequency, tend to be as follows with some victims having more than one type of injury:

• 47%, or almost half, of motorcycle crashes result in lower extremity injuries.
  
• 40% result in upper extremity injuries.
  
• 35% of motorcyclists will sustain a head injury.
  
• 31% of motorcycle wrecks will cause chest injuries.
  
• 20% of motorcyclists will sustain spinal injuries.
  
• 15% of motorcycle accidents will cause abdominal injuries.
• 10% of motorcycle crashes will cause facial injuries.
  

The simple truth is this: serious injuries or death are too often the outcome in motorcycle accidents. According to the National Safety Counsel, the majority of motorcyclist fatalities occurred:

• In urban environments (61%)
• During nice weather (89%)
  
• When the rider was wearing a helmet (59%)
• When the motorcycle operator was not alcohol-impaired. (71%)
