For the 2010-2011 reporting period, 335 tort cases (claims for personal injury or wrongful death) were filed in the 19th Judicial District. During that same time, 16 cases went to trial with 11 of the cases resulting in verdicts for the injured party. The average award was $84,456.00. For the 2011-2012 time frame, 362 tort cases were filed in the 19th Judicial District with 14 cases going to trial. Of those 14 cases, only 4 resulted in a verdict for the injured party. The average award was $35,824.00. In 2012-2013, 302 tort cases were filed in Montgomery County and 18 tort cases were tried. Of those 18 cases, the injured party won only 5 times and the average award was $36,245.00. For the 2013-2014 reporting period, 241 tort cases were filed, 12 were tried and 4 were won by the injured party with an average award of $216,820.00. For the 2014-2015 reporting period, 313 tort cases were filed and 15 were tried. The injury victims only won 2 of the 15 cases and the average of the two verdicts was just $6,809.00. L During 2015-2016, there were 305 tort cases filed, 5 cases went to trial, and none of the injured parties were awarded damages. In 2016-2017, there were 305 tort cases filed and 5 tried (3 jury and 2 non-jury). The injury victims lost all 5 trials. For 2017-2018, tort filings rose to 325 and 13 cases were tried. Again, not a single one resulted in a verdict for the injury victim. Last year, 307 tort cases were filed. Of the 9 cases tried last year, the injury victims only won 4 and the average award was $33,441.
